The foundation stone of King’s George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow was laid by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales in 1906. KGMU is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) & Medical Council of India (MCI). The work of the first medical session was started in October 1911 but the ceremonial opening of the college building by His Honour Sir John Prescot Hewett was on January 27, 1912. The first batch of students qualified in 1916. On 16th September 2002, an Act was passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, resulting in upgrading KGMU as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. Then, in the last week of October 2003, the Government of Uttar Pradesh decided to revert the name of the medical university from C.S.M. Medical University to K.G. Medical University. The university has been ranked 5th among medical colleges in India in 2017 by Outlook India, 10th among medical colleges in 2019 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and 13th by The Week.
KGMU provides excellent internship and job opportunities to its students. The stipend and salary packages received by students are very good.
